Nikolic Found Guilty Of Assault

Friday, 6th September 2013

Controversial jockey Danny Nikolic was found guilty of assaulting fellow jockey Mark Pegus and a police detective in Melbourne Magistrates Court yesterday, reports abc.net.au. Nikolic, who was accused of punching Pegus at Caulfield Racecourse in January 2011, argued that he was only acting in self-defence and that Pegus had struck him first. However, the magistrate said she doubted the reliability of Nikolic's evidence and found him guilty of recklessly causing injury to Pegus. Nikolic was also found guilty of assaulting a Victorian Police Detective during an interview at the St Kilda Police headquarters in April 2011. Nikolic was fined $1500 for both convictions. In a potentially separate action, Racing Victoria stewards will now consider whether to charge Nikolic with the Pegus assault under the rules of racing.
