Levin Classic Rescheduled

Wednesday, 11th September 2013

Meanwhile, New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing has confirmed that this season's Gr1 Levin Turf Classic (1600m) will now be run on the opening day of the Wellington Cup carnival at Trentham on January 18, reports NZ Racing Desk. Levin Racing Club chairman Bruce McCarrison explained: "We believe that shifting the Levin Classic to Trentham in January to be in best interests of both Central Districts and New Zealand racing." Mr McCarrison stated that despite the best efforts of the Levin Club to increase prize-money for the race in recent years, the race was at risk of being downgraded to Gr2 status. "This is a much better scenario for our club than doing nothing and at some point in the future seeing the race lose its Gr1 status and funding," he said. New Zealand Pattern Review Chairman Mark Freeman said their committee had recognised the urgency of addressing the timing of the Levin Classic. "Clearly the existing pattern, which has seen New Zealand's only three Gr1, 1600m 3YO races being programmed in the space of just 20 days in November, was…impacting on the quality of the Levin Classic."
