Western Winter Euthanised

Friday, 13th September 2013

In sad news from South Africa, a statement released by Lammerskraal Stud has advised that former champion sire Western Winter (Gone West-Chilly Hostess, by Vice Regent) has been euthanised at age 21, reports bloodstock.racingpost.com. The statement read: "Our farm is in mourning today. Western Winter passed away at 9.30am. He had undergone a surgical procedure for a twisted gut in the early hours of this morning, and bravely fought back, but broke his front leg badly while trying to get up, and had to be euthanised." It added, "He didn't deserve to go like this, but at the very least we stayed with him until the end and he knew just how much we all loved him." The US-bred sire of a lofty 76 stakes winners (including 20 Gr1 winners and in excess of 140 black type graduates) was crowned champion South African sire three times. With a full book confirmed this season at R150,000, the depth of his influence now remains with the legacy of champions Argonaut, What A Winter (2005 Horse of the Year), Lady Windermere, Ice Cube and Yard Arm (2003 Horse of the Year). Of course, Western Winter also sired current boom horse Capetown Noir (ex Waseela, by Ahonoora), winner in early 2013 of both the Gr1 Cape Guineas & Gr1 Cape Derby.
