Stamina Favourite For Newcastle Gr3 Spring Stakes

Wednesday, 18th September 2013

The Peter Moody-trained Stamina (Sebring-Sky Risks, by Take Risks) has been installed as favourite for today's $150,000 Gr3 Spring Stakes (1600m) at Newcastle. The 3YO colt, who descends from the same family as top stallions Encosta De Lago & Flying Spur, was a brilliant winner at Rosehill last-start when defeating subsequent Golden Rose placegetter Bull Point. Opposing Stamina is a quality field of 3YOs which includes Gr1 performers Fuerza (Champagne Stakes runner-up to Guelph) & Equator (Champagne Stakes third). Other stakes performers include the Chris Waller-trained Vilanova (Gr3 Up & Coming Stakes) & the David Payne-trained Dowdstown Charlie (Listed Rosebud), as well as promising types such as Hooked, Savvy Nature, Rockabill & Wordplay. The Spring Stakes is renowned as a good horse's race, with an honour roll that includes Gr1 winners Ebony Grosve (1996), Shogun Lodge (1999), Universal Prince (2000), Lotteria (2004), Hotel Grand (2005), & Ilovethiscity (2010). Last year's winner Proisir is a two-time Gr1 placegetter.
