Eagle To Kick Off Derby Campaign in Derrinstown
Top Irish colt Free Eagle (High Chaparral-Polished Gem, by Danehill) is likely to start next season off in the Derrinstown Derby Trial at Leopardstown, reports racinguk.com. The Dermot Weld-trained juvenile was promoted to favourite for the 2014 English Derby when powering home by 5.5-lengths on his debut at Leopardstown in August. However, he was firmly put in his place when budding Ballydoyle star Australia (Galileo-Ouija Board, by Cape Cross) left him languishing by 6-lengths in the Gr3 Breeders' Cup Trial Stakes at Leopardstown last start. Weld was left clueless by the performance. "He scoped clean post-race but he just had an off-day for whatever reason," explained the master horseman. "He's a lovely, long-striding horse to go a mile and a quarter or a mile and a half next year. He won't run again this season. We will probably start him off in the Derrinstown at Leopardstown." Free Eagle is a half-brother to Gr2 British Champions Fillies' & Mares' Stakes winner Sapphire & Gr3 Gladness Stakes winner Custom Cut.
