Injury Forces Shirocco Star Retirement
Talented UK mare Shirocco Star (Shirocco-Spectral Star, by Unfuwain) has been retired, reports turftrax.com. The 4YO, who was runner-up in both the English & Irish Oaks last year, dropped out to finish last of eight runners in last weekend's Blandford Stakes at The Curragh but was subsequently found to have sustained a career-ending injury. Trainer Hughie Morrison posted on his website, "Shirocco Star ran well below form in Ireland and has returned sore - further investigation showed a hairline fracture which would explain this performance." Morrison added, "She showed top-class ability on all types of ground throughout her three-year-old career and beat everything who (sic) beat her. She will now be retired to the paddocks and be a great asset to the Meon Valley Stud." Despite winning only once in 13 career outings, Shirocco Star was a classy individual placing eight times in stakes class, including three at Gr1 level, for earnings of £308,526.
