64-Year History Against Orb Gold Cup Mission
Top US colt Orb (Malibu Moon-Lady Liberty, by Unbridled) will try to become the first Kentucky Derby winner to win the Jockey Club Gold Cup in the same year since Ponder in 1949 when he contests Saturday's 95th renewal of the $1 million race, reports drf.com. Derby winners Funny Cide and Affirmed both won the Gold Cup but did so as 4YOs. Orb is coming off a third-placed effort in the Gr1 Travers behind Will Take Charge on Aug 24. "All indications are he bounced out of the race really well," said trainer Shug McGaughey from the Fair Hill Training Centre in Maryland. "Everybody's been very pleased with what's gone on down here. I thought he was very eager to get to the pole this morning. He was looking to work." With the New York State Gaming Commission and the New York Racing Association imposing increased security measures on Gold Cup participants, Orb was scheduled to ship to New York on Tuesday so he would be on the grounds at Belmont Park in time for scheduled drug testing.
