Decision Imminent For Royal Diamond Cup Bid

Thursday, 26th September 2013

UK jockey-trainer Johnny Murtagh plans to give Melbourne Cup aspirant Royal Diamond (King's Best-Irresistible Jewel, by Danehill) a workout over the weekend before deciding whether he makes the trip to Australia, reports racinguk.com. The 7YO, who has been a consistent performer this season with wins in the Gr3 Irish St Leger Trial, Listed Challenge Stakes at Leopardstown, and placings in the Gr3 Curragh Cup & Gr3 Ballyroan Stakes, reportedly pulled up a tired horse after his fifth placing in the Gr1 Irish St Leger two weeks ago behind Voleuse De Coeurs. Royal Diamond has been allotted 54.5kg for the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 5, and Murtagh will need to place him in quarantine by October 3 if he is to arrive among the second batch of European raiders towards the end of the month. Murtagh said: "There's no news yet. We'll wait until the weekend and give him a half-speed gallop then. Hopefully we'll be able to make a decision after that."
