SAf Female Sprinters Overshadow Male Counterparts
This season's major sprint races in South Africa look set to be dominated by fillies with three of them by Avontuur's Gr1 Prix de l'Abbaye winning stallion Var (Forest Wildcat-Loma Preata, by Zilzal), reports goldcircle.co.za. South Africa's sprinting queen Via Africa (Var-Bump 'n Grind, by Qui Danzig) will travel to Cape Town for the Cape Sizzling Summer Season while 3YO filly Garibondy (Var-Moneycantbuymelove, by Jallad) will be aimed at some of the Johannesburg fillies sprints such as the Gr3 Magnolia Handicap (1200m) at Turffontein on Sansui Summer Cup day on December 7, according to her trainer Paul Lafferty. The only female who has ever defeated Via Africa, 4YO mare Schiffer, will also travel to Cape Town. Awaiting Via Africa and Schiffer in the Gr1 Cape Flying Championship, among other races, will be the Vaughan Marshall-trained 4YO Captain Al filly, All Is Secret, who achieved what Via Africa could not when beating What A Winter in the Gr1 Mercury Sprint. When you add Mike de Kock's top sprinting mare Welwitschia to the mix, the females certainly have the top sprints at their mercy, especially with the recent retirement of What A Winter.
