Champion Dayjur Dies

Friday, 27th September 2013

Dayjur (Danzig-Gold Beauty, by Mr. Prospector), who utilised his breathtaking speed to win three Gr1 sprints in Britain and France in 1990, was euthanised at Shadwell Farm in Kentucky on Wednesday due to the infirmities of old age, reports bloodstock.racingpost.com. He was 26. The US-bred son of speed influence Danzig established himself as one of the great European sprinters when blitzing his rivals in the Nunthorpe Stakes, Haydock Sprint Cup and Prix de l'Abbaye during his 3YO season. That year he also claimed the Gr2 King's Stand Stakes & Gr2 Temple Stakes before finishing runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at his final start, to earn a Timeform rating of 137. Dayjur and his Eclipse Stakes-winning stablemate Elmaamul were the first stallions to take up residence at Shadwell Farm when entering stud in 1991. He went on to sire the likes of Middle Park Stakes winner Hayil, South American champion miler Eyjur and Irish champion juvenile filly Asfurah.
