NZ Colt Aspen Targets Derby

Friday, 27th September 2013

Matamata trainer Jason Bridgman has all but ruled out the Gr1 New Zealand 2,000 Guineas for promising 3YO colt Aspen (Alamosa-Kirin Belle, by McGinty) who was an impressive debut winner at Ruakaka earlier this month, reports NZ Racing Desk. "He's a really promising colt and a beautiful type with a super temperament," Bridgman said. "He's not a horse that will handle three runs before Guineas time and I think he will be a lovely Derby type." Bridgman explained that he expects Aspen to develop into a lovely horse. "He keeps going forward and will be at his best from Christmas time on," he said. "He's got the racing manners to do anything you want and when he gets that strength to go with his ability he will be a really good horse." Aspen is by young O'Reilly stallion Alamosa from the good producer Kirin Belle, making him a half-brother to Gr2-winning Zabeel mare Winning Belle & Gr3 Taranaki Cup winner Our Ella Belle (Encosta de Lago).
