Stephens Follows Alcopop Path With Gris Caro
Jake Stephens, trainer of crowd favourite and 2012 Gr1 Mackinnon Stakes winner Alcopop (Jeune-Iota Of Luck, by Blevic) is hoping that lightning strikes twice at Moonee Valley tonight where his emerging import Gris Caro (With Approval-Aviane, by Winged Love) is set to follow in the footsteps of his now retired stablemate by tackling the Gr3 JRA Cup after being successful on debut in Australia in the Listed Balaklava Cup, reports springracingcarnival.com.au. Alcopop ran away with the same double in 2009 but Stephens noted that the two gallopers are physically poles apart, "They're chalk and cheese ... Gris Caro is more of a stayer who barely blows at all after his work and gives the impression that he'll get over a fair bit of ground ... He's nowhere near as big and strong as Alcopop and he doesn't have the same devastating turn of foot." In terms of future missions, Stephens crystal balled, "He's only really a four-year-old being bred to northern hemisphere time and he's more likely to be targeted towards some of those second-tier staying races like a Moonee Valley Cup (2500m)."
