McDonald Reunites With Dear Demi

Tuesday, 1st October 2013

James McDonald has been booked to ride Dear Demi (Dehere-Shirley, by Zabeel) in next month's Gr1 Caulfield Cup (2400m), reports NZ Racing Desk. The Clarry Conners-trained 4YO mare has been allotted 51.5kg for the $2.5 million spring feature but weights will rise 1kg if Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon is withdrawn as expected. Dear Demi, winner of the Gr1 VRC Oaks, was responsible for a superb last-start effort in the Gr1 Underwood Stakes when finishing a close-up third to star gallopers It's A Dundeel & Atlantic Jewel. "This'll be the lightest I've ridden for a long time but she's a quality horse and her run in the Underwood was huge," McDonald said. "She was chasing the first and second favourites for the Cox Plate and drops very nicely in weight for the Caulfield Cup." McDonald says he is excited about partnering Dear Demi for the first time since the Flight Stakes in October last year. "I won the Tea Rose Stakes on her last spring and finished third in the Flight Stakes, but got suspended and lost the ride," he said. "Jim Cassidy got aboard and subsequently won the Oaks on her. There's a bit of unfinished business for me."
