Orb Gold Cup Flop Puzzles Connections

Tuesday, 1st October 2013

Kentucky Derby winner Orb (Malibu Moon-Lady Liberty, by Unbridled) has reportedly pulled up well despite his last-place finish in last weekend's Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park, reports bloodhorse.com. His 22.25-lengths defeat at the hands of winner Ron The Greek is the worst performance of the 3YOs career and has left connections searching for answers. "Orb seemed to come back fine," said assistant trainer Buzz Tenney. "He cooled out fine, and we put him on the van and sent him back to Fair Hill (in Maryland) last night. Really no excuses we could see." Tenney continued, "I think we were all very, very confident, and it was disappointing, to say the least. We scoped him after the race yesterday, and he was clean. So far, that's all that has been done." The Gold Cup was the eighth run of Orb's 2013 campaign which has included two Gr1 victories, namely the Kentucky Derby & the Florida Derby. Hitherto, Orb has won 5 of his 12 starts for US$2,612,516 earnings.
