Kavanagh Voices Atlantic Stamina Doubts

Wednesday, 2nd October 2013

Mark Kavanagh has admitted that he has stamina doubts about superstar mare Atlantic Jewel (Fastnet Rock-Regard, by Zabeel), reports racingnetwork.com.au. The Flemington-based horseman was asked whether he thought the 5YO daughter of Fastnet Rock was guaranteed to get the 2040 metres of her primary spring objective, the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on October 26. "Certainly there are plenty of doubts but I'm quite happy to be going forward," Kavanagh said. Atlantic Jewel's last-start loss to It's A Dundeel in the Underwood Stakes over 1800m, the only defeat of her career, seems to have brought out the naysayers who are questioning her Cox Plate credentials. As Kavanagh commented, "It's funny how she was the shortest priced favourite and now after one defeat… she's suss at the trip." Atlantic Jewel's next start will be in the Gr1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) on October 12.
