Orb Probably Done For Year

Wednesday, 2nd October 2013

Kentucky Derby winner Orb, who finished last in Saturday's $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park, will most likely not run again this year, reports drf.com. While no decision has yet been made as to whether the valuable colt will return as a 4YO, co-owner Stuart Janney intimated the son of Malibu Moon had probably run his last race for the season. "I would suspect he's done racing this year," Janney said. "We'll figure out what we want to do next year." Orb's uncharacteristically poor showing on the weekend "dumbfounded" trainer Shug McGaughey who thought he was in good shape leading up to the race. "Something happened," McGaughey said. "I don't know what it was. I'll figure it out." He added, "I thought he ran a good race in the Travers and he trained too well and looked too well to run like that." An endoscopic examination did not reveal any blood or mucus in Orb's lungs and the horse did not appear to have any other physical issues.
