SAf Champ Dancewiththedevil Retired

Thursday, 3rd October 2013

Meanwhile, Champion South African mare Dancewiththedevil (Modus Vivendi-Emperor's Dance, by Caesour) has been retired, reports goldcircle.co.za. Owner-breeder St John Gray, who trained the 7YO to nine wins in a stellar career, has confirmed the mare's retirement in England: "The rains we've been waiting for have sadly come too late for her," Gray lamented. Dancewithdevil won five times at Gr1 level, namely in the Horse Chestnut Stakes (twice), Empress Club Stakes, Gold Challenge & Summer Cup, to establish herself as the country's best female miler. However, she also silenced the doubters who thought she was ineffective beyond a mile when storming home to claim the 2011 Summer Cup, having turned for home in her customary last position. Sent to Britain in 2012, Dancewiththedevil had just the one start for Newmarket trainer Roger Varian when unplaced in this year's Gr3 Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot. Gray says he is now considering several options for his beloved mare. "I've had enquiries from some interested parties. If I don't sell her, I would love to send her to a high-profile stallion such as Galileo."
