Royal Diamond To Miss Cup

Friday, 4th October 2013

Trainer-jockey Johnny Murtagh has decided to bypass the Melbourne Cup with UK stayer Royal Diamond (King's Best-Irresistible Jewel, by Danehill), reports turftrax.com. Last year's Gr1 Irish St Leger winner looked like making the trip to Australia after winning the Gr3 Irish St Leger Trial in August, but those plans went awry when he finishing a disappointing 5th to Australian-bound Voleuse de Coeurs when bidding to defend his St Leger title at The Curragh last month. The Andrew Tinkler-owned 7YO gelding will now be aimed at the British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot on October 19. Murtagh tweeted: "Royal Diamond will not be running in Melbourne Cup. After speaking to Andrew Tinkler we have decided to keep him for Ascot."
