Guelph Still A Chance Of Emulating Surround

Wednesday, 9th October 2013

Darley's sensational filly Guelph, who racked up her third Gr1 victory in last weekend's Gr1 Flight Stakes, is still a chance at competing in the Australasian weight-for-age championship, the Cox Plate, later this month at Moonee Valley. According to news.com.au, the Peter Snowden-trained filly held her place among 36 horses when third acceptances were announced yesterday afternoon, even though her primary Spring focus is the Gr1 Thousand Guineas. While 3YOs have won 16 of the past 21 runnings of France's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, that race is run when the 3YOs are comparatively some 6 months older, a situation amplified by history showing that not since Surround saluted in 1976 has a 3YO filly achieved Cox Plate victory.
