No Rain For Soft Falling Rain

Friday, 11th October 2013

South African trainer Mike De Kock has expressed concerns about Soft Falling Rain handling soft ground if the track were to be rain affected on British Champions Day, reports racingpost.com. Soft Falling Rain (National Assembly-Gardener's Delight, by Giant's Causeway), last-start winner of the Gr2 Joel Stakes at Newmarket, is favoured in most markets to win the Gr1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (8 furlongs) on Champions Day but De Kock is hoping for firm footing. "From what I know about him, I don't think it would suit him if it got too soft," said De Kock. "If it gets bottomless I'd probably have to discuss with [owner] Sheikh Hamdan about what we'd do. My gut feeling is that he wouldn't want it too soft." The Queen Elizabeth is shaping up as a cracking contest, with star 3YOs Toronado & Dawn Approach also lining up. De Kock is under no illusions about the task that confronts Soft Falling Rain. "The QEII will be a massive step up and a really good test," he said. "He came out of Newmarket very well, it is hard to say whether he has improved or not but he seems to be doing very well."
