Long John Gets Cox Plate Nod From Darley Head

Wednesday, 16th October 2013

Darley principal Sheikh Mohammed has given his imprimatur for last Saturday's Gr1 Caulfield Guineas winner Long John (Street Cry-Hosiery, by Night Shift) to contest Saturday week's Gr1 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley, reports racingnetwork.com.au. Darley Australian CEO Henry Plumptre & trainer Peter Snowden put forward a recommendation that the 3YO gelding be allowed to take his place following a powerful performance over the weekend. While the Gr1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is dominated by 3YOs, the Cox Plate is different insofar as 3YOs in the Southern Hemisphere weight-for-age championship are effectively 6 months less mature than would be the case if the Cox Plate was held in April. That is mitigated to an extent by the 49.5kg that Long John will shoulder, as well as the fact that he is a big, strong type who is expected to race handy.
