Racing Legend Passes Away

Friday, 18th October 2013

The Office of Premier Denis Napthine has announced the sad passing of one of Victorian racing's most illustrious contributors, Mr Andrew Ramsden. His decorated racing career was headlined by his Chairmanship of the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) for five years and his position on the VRC Committee for 21 years. He also held the position of Chairman of the Australian Racing Board. Andrew played a pivotal role in the successful establishment of Racing Victoria Limited (RVL) amidst a challenging thoroughbred racing backdrop at the time. As well as being an exceptional racing administrator, he was also a highly successful racehorse owner winning 2 Melbourne Cups and 4 Caulfield Cups. Honouring his strong interest in particularly staying races, the other 3200 metre race at Flemington other than the Melbourne Cup now bears his name, the Andrew Ramsden Stakes.
