Fawkner Gets Melbourne Cup Penalty
Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner (Reset-Dane Belltar, by Danewin) has received a 1.5kg penalty for the $6.2 million Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 5, reports abc.net.au. The 6YO gelding will have to carry 54.5kg to victory if he is to provide the Williams stable with successive Cup victories after Green Moon's success last year. Should Fawkner win on the first Tuesday in November, he will become just the 12th horse in history to claim the Caulfield-Melbourne Cups double. The last horse to complete the Cups double was kiwi mare Ethereal which was penalised 2kg after winning the Caulfield Cup in 2001. In explaining his reasoning for imposing a penalty, Racing Victoria (RV) Executive General Manager of Racing, Greg Carpenter, commented: "Fawkner was strong on the line in the BMW Caulfield Cup at his first run beyond 2040m and has been penalised 1.5kg in the weights for the Emirates Melbourne Cup for his Group 1 victory." Carpenter continued, "The 1.5kg penalty is the same afforded to Descarado (2010), Master O'Reilly (2007) and Sky Heights (1999) following their wins in the BMW Caulfield Cup. In the last 20 years only Viewed (1kg in 2009) and Dunaden (1kg in 2012) have received lesser penalties."
