Jewel Has Likely Date With Galileo
Following yesterday's sensational withdrawal of superstar Australian mare Atlantic Jewel (Fastnet Rock-Regard, by Zabeel) from Saturday's $3 million WS Cox Plate after succumbing to a tendon injury, theage.com.au reports that the imposing 4YO mare could be headed to Europe for a northern-hemisphere mating. Coolmore Australia general manager Michael Kirwan, who part owns Atlantic Jewel revealed "tentative plans [are] to send the daughter of Fastnet Rock to be mated with champion European stallion Galileo, the sire of outstanding racehorse Frankel". Trainer Mark Kavanagh issued a release yesterday advising the 4-time Gr1 winner was found to be suffering from swelling in an offside tendon after working at Flemington yesterday morning. In his statement, Kavanagh said, "Scans have just confirmed that there is damage in this tendon and therefore Atlantic Jewel will be scratched from Saturday's Cox Plate."
