Hidden Cost To Fastnet Rock Of Atlantic Jewel Retirement
While there are no 'gimmees' in racing, Atlantic Jewel's cramped odds for Saturday's Gr1 Cox Plate on Saturday prior to her career-ending injury suggested the daughter of Fastnet Rock would have gone close to winning the Moonee Valley feature event. Had she done so, the $1.8 million winner's purse would have made a massive contribution to the general earnings total of her sire Fastnet Rock, a figure that no doubt would have been swelled further by whatever she might have achieved next autumn. To put the potential 'penalty' into perspective, last season's champion sire Exceed And Excel topped the table with earnings of $11,437,997. Assuming a similar benchmark is required to wear the crown for the 2013/14 season, the Cox Plate $1.8 million would have contributed 15.7 percent. Fastnet Rock could yet have the $1.8 million earnings underpin his title fight, ironically courtesy of his son Super Cool, Atlantic Jewel's stablemate from the Mark Kavanagh yard.
