Ibicenco Receives Cup Penalty

Friday, 25th October 2013

Wednesday's Gr3 Geelong Cup winner Ibicenco (Shirocco-Iberi, by Rainbow Quest) has received a 1kg penalty promoting him to 34th in the order of entry for the Melbourne Cup, reports sportal.com.au. Racing Victoria's chief handicapper Greg Carpenter said that the penalty was fair given the impressive nature of his win. "Ibicenco underlined his staying ability by proving too strong at the finish of [Wednesday's] Geelong Cup that was run in testing conditions," Carpenter said. "There was a significant margin back to Moudre in third place and with the 1kg penalty Ibicenco moves 0.5kg above Moudre (52.5kg) in the handicap having beaten him at level weights yesterday." Carpenter also mentioned the growing stature of the Geelong Cup as a significant form reference for the Melbourne Cup, with recent winners Dunaden (2011), Americain (2010) & Media Puzzle (2002) going on to claim Cup glory. "The record of Geelong Cup winners has been outstanding in recent years in the Melbourne Cup with the three winners and two runners-up from the last eight to contest the race," Carpenter added.
