Setback For St Nicholas Abbey

Friday, 25th October 2013

St Nicholas Abbey (Montjeu-Leaping Water, by Sure Blade) has suffered a setback in his fight to recover from a fractured pastern, reports attheraces.com. The former star galloper, who won six Gr1s during his brilliant career, suffered the career-ending injury when he fractured his pastern and fetlock bones during track work at Ballydoyle in July. Reports emanating from Ireland over the past few weeks had been positive, but owners Coolmore tweeted a statement on Wednesday evening which read: "St Nicholas Abbey has suffered a setback over the last 24 hours having developed mild laminitic changes in the left-fore. This is disappointing as he is now weight bearing and walking well on the operated (fractured) leg which has healed amazingly well to date." The statement continued, "Although laminitis could be a life threatening complication we are hoping the condition will stabilise. Obviously the next weeks are critical in his recovery but St Nicholas Abbey remains comfortable with a good appetite and incredible attitude." It is hoped that the 6YO son of Montjeu can recover sufficiently to pursue a stud career.
