Kris Lees To Train Shamus Half Sibling

Wednesday, 30th October 2013

Broadmeadow horseman Kris Lees has been named as the trainer of an unraced sibling to Cox Plate winner Shamus Award (Snitzel-Sunset Express, by Success Express). The as yet unnamed 2YO filly is by Not A Single Doubt, rendering her a three-quarter relation to Shamus Award who created history by becoming the first maiden to ever win the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley last Saturday. The filly was bred by Lees' long-term stable client Bob Hannon, who also bred Shamus Award. "She is broken in and we'll educate her and go from there," Lees said. "Who knows what might happen down the track?" Lees continued, "Bob has been a wonderful supporter of our stable for many, many years. Dad (the late Max Lees) trained an Irish mare From The Wood which Bob purchased in 1989 on the recommendation of bloodstock agent Kieran Moore." At stud, From The Wood, a Gr3 winner in Ireland, produced Luskin Star mare Finito Fling who in turn produced Sunset Express, the dam of Shamus Award. Max Lees trained Sunset Express for her first seven starts for two wins at Newcastle and Gosford. Following his death Kris prepared Sunset Express for her final 16 starts, guiding her to three more victories.
