Wide Draws For Favourites In Gr1 BC Dirt Mile

Wednesday, 30th October 2013

Meanwhile, 3YOs Verrazano and Goldencents, leading protagonists for Friday's Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita, have both drawn tough outside barriers, reports drf.com. Verrazano, trained by Todd Pletcher, drew barrier 10, while the California-based Goldencents drew the outside gate of 12 for Doug O'Neill in the $1 million Gr1 feature. Pletcher lost the likely favourite for the race earlier on Monday when it was announced that the highly progressive Graydar would stay home in New York after succumbing to a quarter crack. Barriers play a crucial part in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile because of the short run into the first turn. Consequently, the race is the only Breeders' Cup event that is limited to 12 runners. More Than Ready colt Verrazano has established himself as one of the best 3YOs in the land, winning the Gr1 Wood Memorial Stakes & Gr1 Haskell Invitational, while Into Mischief colt Goldencents is a winner of the Gr1 Santa Anita Derby and most recently finished runner-up to ill-fated sprinter Points Offthebench in the Gr1 Sprint Championship Stakes. Verrazano is currently the 3-1 favourite ahead of Goldencents at 4-1.
