Heavy Cup Support For Athos

Thursday, 31st October 2013

The latest Melbourne Cup betting has seen sustained support for the Luca Cumani-trained UK galloper Mount Athos (Montjeu-Ionian Sea, by Slip Anchor), reports horseracing.com.au. Mount Athos sits on the second line of betting behind race favourite Fiorente, at 9-1. The move seems to be based on reports that the 6YO son of Montjeu has been working well at the International Equine Centre at Werribee. Mount Athos finished fifth in last year's Cup, but he should have arguably finished closer after enduring a tough run. Last year Mount Athos was partnered by champion UK hoop Ryan Moore, but this year will be ridden by local Melbourne jockey Craig Williams who has done quite a bit of work on the gelding in the lead up to this year's race. "I am really happy with him," Williams said. "Yesterday they changed a bit of gear around on him and I had a sit on him behind a horse and that gave me a bit more of an understanding about his attitude and his mannerisms." Williams continued, "If I head down to Werribee again I will jump on for another canter but he has done all his work now and I have a good understanding." Mount Athos showed that a return to his best form may be just around the corner when finishing runner-up to talented stayer Harris Tweed in the Listed March Stakes at Goodwood last start. "His runs have been quite good without winning and in his last run before coming over here he gave weight to Harris Tweed and since then Harris Tweed just got beaten in a pretty good staying race at Ascot," Williams said.
