Filly With Bernborough Link Wins Debut In South Africa
Australian-bred filly Alboran Sea made a winning debut in South Africa on Tuesday when scoring by 0.8-lengths for trainer Mike de Kock in the All To Come Maiden Juvenile Plate (1000m) at Clairwood. Alboran Sea, by Rock Of Gibraltar from the US-bred mare Lady's Light (Toolighttoquit), was a $105,000 purchase by Form Bloodstock from the draft of Rosemont Stud at the 2013 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. Interestingly, Alboran Sea's fourth dam is the dual Gr1-winning US mare Parading Lady, whose sire is none other than legendary Australian racehorse Bernborough. The Toowoomba Tornado was the first genuine champion racehorse to grace Australian racetracks after Phar Lap winning 14 stakes races during the mid-1940s, including 9 at Gr1 level. However, his great career was brought to a premature end when he sustained a sesamoid injury in the Mackinnon Stakes and was sold to the US for stud duties, where he proved quite successful boasting progeny earnings in excess of US$4.5 million.
