Akzar Wins Listed Warrnambool Cup
At Warrnambool in Victoria, 7YO Irish-bred gelding Akzar (Selkirk-Alaiyda, by Shahrastani) registered his maiden stakes success when romping home by 6-lengths for trainer Darren Weir in the $200,000 Listed Warrnambool Cup (2350m) for 3YO+, over 5YO gelding Westsouthwest (Darci Brahma-Southern Sunset, by Polish Precedent) & 4YO gelding Shoreham (Reset-Teneales Pearl, by Redoute's Choice). Akzar took his record to 8 wins and 12 placings (including the Gr3 MRC Easter Cup & Gr3 Ballyroan Stakes at Leopardstown) from 35 starts for $483,319 earnings. By deceased Gr1-winning sire Selkirk (Sharpen Up), Akzar is a half-brother to Irish Derby & King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Alamshar (Key Of Luck) from the Shahrastani mare Alaiyda. Azkar is actually a direct descendant of one of the most important broodmares of the 20th Century in Mumtaz Mahal. One of the Aga Khan's foundation mares, Mumtaz Mahal's influence on the thoroughbred breed has been tremendous with some of her most notable descendants including Mahmoud, Nasrullah, Royal Charger, Abernant, Petite Etoile, and Shergar.
