Wise Dan To Defend Turf Classic Crown
Two-time US Horse of the Year Wise Dan (Wiseman's Ferry-Lisa Danielle, by Wolf Power) is back to defend his title in Saturday's Gr1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (9 furlongs), the traditional lead-up to the Kentucky Derby on a 13-race card at Churchill Downs, reports kentucky.com. The Charles LoPresti-trained Wise Dan, who won last year's Turf Classic by 4.75-lengths, will be ridden by Hall Of Fame jockey John Velazquez and jump from the rails draw. The 7YO will be making his second start of the season after capturing the Gr1 Maker's 46 Mile Stakes at Keeneland on 11 April, his ninth Gr1 success. "This horse is incredible. They don't come around that often. He's definitely a special horse, and he's proven it the last two-three years," Velazquez said after winning the Maker's 46. A six-time Eclipse Award winner, Wise Dan has won the last two editions of the Breeders' Cup Mile and since the beginning of 2012 has won 12 of 14 starts. He also boasts an imperious record at Churchill Downs, winning six of his 10 starts at the famous Twin Spires track. LoPresti is anticipating another bold show from the son of Wiseman's Ferry, who breezed three furlongs in 35 seconds at Keeneland on Tuesday. "He worked super, super—one of his best workouts of the year," the affable horseman told bloodhorse.com. Wise Dan will face nine rivals on Saturday, headed by Ken & Sarah Ramsay's Gr1 Secretariat Stakes winner Admiral Kitten (Kitten's Joy-Reachinforthestars, by Grand Slam).
