Chautauqua Wins Gr3 Hawkesbury Guineas

Monday, 5th May 2014

At Hawkesbury in Sydney, Coolmore's former dual Champion Australian Sire Encosta De Lago (Fairy King-Shoal Creek, by Star Way) added a group success when 3YO gelding Chautauqua (Encosta de Lago-Lovely Jubly, by Lion Hunter) scored by 1.5-lengtsh for the training triumvirate of Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes in the $150,000 Gr3 Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) for 3YOs, over 3YO New Zealand filly Katie's Cove (Zabeel-Al Samoud, by Desert Prince) & fellow 3YO gelding Barbed (Canny Lad-Key Bar Nights, by Anabaa). This was the first stakes victory for Chautauqua who took his record to 2 wins and 3 placings (including the Listed Gosford Guineas) from 6 starts for $163,625 earnings. Chautauqua failed to meet his $400,000 reserve when passed in for $300,000 at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Berkeley Park Stud. He is the second stakes winner for Gr1 BRC Sires' Produce Stakes winner Lovely Jubly who has also produced Gr3 SAJC Breeders' Stakes winning filly London Lolly (Charge Forward).
