Leebaz Wins Gr3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup

Monday, 5th May 2014

At Hawkesbury in Sydney, Cambridge Stud's retired Champion sire Zabeel (Sir Tristram-Lady Giselle, by Nureyev) added a group success when highly promising 4YO gelding Leebaz (Zabeel-Polish Princess, by Polish Precedent) scored by 0.8-length for the training triumvirate of Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes in the $150,000 Gr3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) for 3YO+, over 4YO mare Wistful (Tiger Hill-Angalreem, by Mr. Prospector) & 7YO gelding Keep Cool (High Chaparral-Casual Chick, by Casual Lies). This was the first stakes victory for the exciting Leebaz who boosted his imposing strike rate to 6 wins and 1 placing (the Gr3 Doncaster Mile Prelude) from 9 starts for $264,200 earnings. Leebaz was a $460,000 purchase by Hawkes Racing at the 2011 NZ Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Windsor Park Stud. From the stakes winning Polish Precedent mare Polish Princess, Leebaz is a half-brother to Gr2 Tulloch Stakes winner Polish Knight and hails from the outstanding Meon Valley Stud (England) family of Irish Champion Stakes winner Cezanne and Irish Oaks winner Colorspin, dam of top-class Gr1-winning siblings Kayf Tara and Opera House.
