Caduceus Has Derby In Sights

Tuesday, 6th May 2014

Meanwhile, Shailer says the VRC Derby is a potential long-term target for unbeaten 2YO stakes winner Caduceus, reports NZ Racing Desk. "The Kiwis have got a good record in it and he won't have any trouble staying," said Shailer, who prepares the son of Lucky Unicorn with his brother Kris. Successful in the Listed Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie last month after a debut win at Woodville, Caduceus' early success has come as a pleasant surprise. "He's a pretty unassuming character and he's always had a good action, but he's never lit up the track or won a trial," Shailer said. "He sat three deep at Waverley with no cover and the horse he beat (Cousin Colin) has won since and at Ellerslie they walked early and sprinted home so to come from last was a massive effort." Shailer added, "He's in the paddock now and we might look to start off at Hastings and see where we go from there." Caduceus is out of the Lion Heart mare French Lion, a half-sister to Gr3 South African Cup Trial winner Eight Street (Street Cry) and talented South African 4YO entire Ottimo (Oratorio), from Figure Of Eight, a French bred daughter of champion Octagonal.
