Shamardal Adds Ireland Black-Type

Wednesday, 7th May 2014

At The Curragh in Ireland, European champion 4-time Gr1-winning former Darley shuttler Shamardal (Giant's Causeway-Helsinki, by Machiavellian) added a black-type success when 3YO Irish colt Alkasser (Shamardal-Alexander Queen, by King's Best) scored by 0.75-length for trainer Dermot Weld in the Listed Tetrarch Stakes (8 furlongs) for 3YOs, over fellow colts Focus On Venice (Intense Focus-Marina Of Venice, by Galileo) & Intensical (Intense Focus-Christinas Letter, by Galileo). This was the first stakes victory for Alkasser who took his record to 2 wins from 3 starts for €41,125 earnings. Racing in the blue and white Shadwell colours of Hamdan Al Maktoum, Alkasser may now take his chance in the Irish 2,000 Guineas at The Curragh on 24 May. "I was concerned about him getting seven furlongs today, but he got it well," said Weld. "Whether he'll get a mile is another question, but I'll speak to Sheikh Hamdan and Angus Gold and he might go for the Guineas."
