Veteran Jockey To Be Honoured

Wednesday, 7th May 2014

Racing NSW chairman John Messara will make a special presentation to honour jockey Robert Thompson at next Friday's Scone Cup meeting, reports racingnetwork.com.au. No jockey in Australian racing history has ridden more winners than Thompson, who achieved his latest milestone of 4,000 winners at Newcastle last Saturday.  Racing NSW CEO, Peter V'Landys, said Thompson's achievement was a credit to his tremendous work ethic. "Robert is one of the most humble people you could meet and without doubt everybody in the racing industry looks up to him," Mr V'landys said. "He has been riding for 40 years which equates to averaging 100 winners a season – that is an incredible feat." Racing NSW Chairman of Stewards, Ray Murrihy, praised Thompson's incredible horsemanship, explaining that his last suspension for careless riding was in May, 2007 - Thompson has had over 5,000 rides since. "Robert has a genuine passion of the industry and respect for his fellow riders," Mr Murrihy said. "He rides very safely and never takes unnecessary risks yet he still gets the results."
