Zenyatta To Be Rested from Breeding Duties
Champion US racemare Zenyatta (Street Cry-Vertigineux, by Kris S) will not be covered this season after producing three foals in three years, reports bloodstock.racingpost.com. The 2010 US Horse of the Year won 13 Gr1s and became the only female to win the Breeders' Cup Classic in 2009. The following year, she suffered her only loss in 20 starts when going down narrowly to Blame in the Breeders' Cup Classic at her final start. She retired with earnings of US$7,304,580; a record for a North American female. The first foal that Zenyatta produced for her owner-breeders Jerry and Ann Moss was a 2YO Bernardini colt named Cozmic One, who is currently in training at Mayberry Farm in Ocala, Florida. She also has a yearling colt by Tapit named Ziconic and delivered her third foal at Easter, a filly by Claiborne Farm's boom stallion War Front (Danzig). "Zenyatta has given us three beautiful foals in three years. She excels at motherhood, a role she wholeheartedly enjoys," Team Zenyatta said on their website zenyatta.com. "From the start, Zenyatta's happiness and well-being has been our top priority. Following the birth of her perfect new filly, we have decided to honor her by giving her a year off from foaling. She will not be bred this year." Team Z added, "Zenyatta continues to be in good health and excellent condition. She will have time to rest, mentally and physically, and to enjoy being a horse in one of the most beautiful places in the country. We would like to thank the wonderful people at Lane's End Farm for making all of this possible."
