Caulfield Cup Target For Lucia Valentina
Meanwhile, bloodstock agent Bruce Perry reports that outstanding New Zealand filly Lucia Valentina, who is also owned by Lib Petagna, is being aimed at the Caulfield Cup in the spring. The 3YO Savabeel filly won the Gr3 Wellington Stakes for trainer Stephen Marsh before being transferred to the Broadmeadow stable of Kris Lees earlier this year. Lucia Valentina (Savabeel-Staryn Glenn, by Montjeu) won the Gr1 Vinery Stud Stakes to earn favouritism for the Australian Oaks where she turned in an eye-catching performance to come from the tail of the field for third. "Provided she comes up well, Kris is tentatively looking at the Tramway to kick her off and then a couple of lead-up races into the Caulfield Cup," Perry said. If she can make the necessary physical improvement between now and spring, Lucia Valentina's pedigree suggests she fits the profile of a filly capable of making the quantum leap from fillies' grade to open class handicaps. Not only is she a granddaughter of the mighty Zabeel, but her broodmare sire is the internationally renowned stamina influence Montjeu. The progeny of both stallions are known for their propensity to improve markedly with age, so Lucia Valentina stands a good a chance as any of her contemporaries of making her presence felt against Australasia's best gallopers later in the year. However, only five mares have won the Caulfield Cup in the last 25 years, namely Southern Speed (2011), Ethereal (2001), Arctic Scent (1996), Mannerism (1992) and Let's Elope (1991).
