Katie's Guineas Bid Doubtful

Friday, 9th May 2014

Roger James has all but given up his Gr2 Queensland Guineas aspirations for promising Kiwi filly Katie's Cove (Zabeel-Al Samoud, by Desert Prince), who was an unlucky runner-up in last weekend's Hawkesbury Guineas, reports NZ Racing Desk. "I thought the run was enormous and without a great deal of luck really," James said. "Unfortunately, I took her there to amass some more money to try and get her into the Queensland Guineas field…and she needed to win and that would have given her enough to get into the Guineas, but now it's looking very doubtful she will." James said that one possible option was for Katie's Cove to contest the Gr3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) for three-year-old fillies at Doomben on Saturday week in order to secure enough prize-money to sneek into the Queensland Guineas field, but believes it is less than ideal. "I'm looking at all alternatives and probably the best one is just to go to a three-year-old 1400m in Sydney in three weeks' time worth $85,000 and then bring her home and that might set her up for Melbourne in the spring," he said. By retired champion sire Zabeel, Katie's Cove is out of the Desert Prince mare Al Samoud and hails from the family of 4-time Gr1 winner All Our Mob and VATC 1,000 Guineas winner All Time High.
