Karakontie Wins Gr1 French 2,000 Guineas
At Longchamp in France on Sunday, 3YO Japanese-bred colt Karakontie (Bernstein-Sun Is Up, by Sunday Silence) justified favouritism when scoring by a neck for trainer Jonathan Pease in the €550,000 Gr1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains (8 furlongs) for 3YO colts, over fellow colts Prestige Vendome (Orpen-Place Vendome, by Dr Fong) & Pornichet (Vespone-Porza, by Septieme Ciel). This was the second Gr1 victory for Karakontie who took his record to 4 wins (including the Gr1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere) and 2 placings (including the Gr3 Prix de Fontainebleau) from 6 starts for €593,260 earnings. Alan Cooper, racing manager to winning owners the Niarchos family, said: "Most of all bravo to the horse because the rain didn't help his cause but he is tough. It was a good performance and he has strengthened up over the winter and he came on again after the Fontainebleau," reported racingpost.com. Cooper added that races such as the Jockey Club (French Derby), the Irish Guineas, Ascot and Epsom were possible future targets.
