NZB Weanling & Broodmare Day-2: Average Up 26%
Increases to the aggregate, average and median at yesterday's broodmare session highlighted a successful second and final day of New Zealand Bloodstock's National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale. Of the 220 broodmares catalogued this year, 136 sold for $1,169,950 at a clearance rate of 79%. This figure was up 14 per cent from last year's $1,026,900. The average price rose 26 per cent to $8,603, while the median was a remarkable 108 per cent higher at $3,325. The day's top seller was 8YO Rock Of Gibraltar mare Quatro (Lot 416), who was knocked down to Wellfield Holdings for NZ$80,000 from the consignment of Blandford Lodge. Quatro is a daughter of Gr1 Australian Oaks winner My Brilliant Star (Copper Kingdom) and a half-sister to Gr1 Toorak Handicap winner Shot of Thunder (Thunder Gulch). Bill Gleeson of Wellfield Lodge was pleased with his purchase. "First and foremost she's a stunning mare and a super type and she has a good Australian-based pedigree that we liked," he said. "She will be going to Alamosa." The reduced two-day Sale this year provided strong competition with pleasing increases to key statistics. "We saw a flow-on effect from a healthy weanling market yesterday in the broodmare session with the average and median both posting good rises," commented NZB Bloodstock Sales Manager Danny Rolston. "There were a number of mares that inspected very well and when that matched up with pedigree and performance the market was very competitive."
