Meehan Ponders Ascot For J Wonder
A trip to Royal Ascot could come under consideration for talented filly J Wonder (Footstepsinthesand-Canterbury lace, by Danehill) following a creditable performance in Sunday's French 1,000 Guineas, reports racinguk.com. The 3YO daughter of Footstepsinthesand earned her shot at Classic glory by claiming the Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury on her seasonal return and connections opted to bypass the Guineas at Newmarket in favour of the French equivalent. Trainer Brian Meehan hoped some ease in the ground at Longchamp would suit his filly more than the faster ground she would have encountered on the Rowley Mile, but the trainer believes the rain-softened turf and her poor draw contributed to her downfall when finishing seventh. "She's come out of the race fine. Unfortunately she ended up in a spot where, apart from the Poulains winner, no horse was able to win from all day," lamented Meehan. "She was on the rail and from where she was drawn we weren't able to drop her in, so she was a little bit keen early on and Christophe said the ground was too soft for her." Asked whether a trip to Royal Ascot was a possibility, the trainer said: "Potentially. She'll have a few days off now, probably the best part of a week and we'll see where we are after that." He added, "There's the Coronation and the Jersey Stakes. The owner has gone back to America, so we'll have a discussion and make a plan."
