Unencumbered Retired To Stud

Thursday, 15th May 2014

Magic Millions Classic winner Unencumbered (Testa Rossa-Blizzardly, by More Than Ready) has been retired to stand at Three Bridges Thoroughbreds in Victoria for the upcoming breeding season, reports racingnetwork.com.au. The son of Testa Rossa won 5 of his 10 starts as a 2YO for over $1.9 million prize-money. Trainer Bjorn Baker said Unencumbered, who had a close association with Nathan Berry before his tragic passing, would always hold a special place in his heart. "To get a horse like him is a dream, he didn't cost much as a yearling [$70,000] and he gave his owners a great ride, highlighted by his win at the Gold Coast," Baker said. Three Bridges' founder Peter Liston said that he expected Unencumbered, who was also placed in the Gr2 Todman Stakes behind Ghibellines, to prove popular among breeders. "We are delighted to have secured him and are happy to retire him now as we believe he's done enough and in winning the Magic Millions has put himself in some very good company as few colts have won it," said Liston. "It's [Magic Millions Classic] become a sire-making race and even colts that were placed in it, such as Snitzel and Not a Single Doubt have proven very successful at stud". Unencumbered is out of the Listed Keith Mackay Handicap winner Blizzardly and is a direct descendant of outstanding UK race mare and producer Crystal Palace. Crystal Palace, winner of the Gr1 Falmouth Stakes and Gr1 Nassau Stakes, produced three stakes winners at stud including six-time Gr1-winning stallion Royal Palace, winner of the 2,000 Guineas, English Derby and the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, among others.
