Azkar Ready For Gr1 Debut

Friday, 16th May 2014

Jockey Brad Rawiller says he cannot fault in-form stayer Azkar (Selkirk-Alaiyda, by Shahrastani) as he prepares for his biggest test to date in tomorrow's Gr1 Doomben Cup (2000m), reports racingnetwork.com.au. The 7YO Irish-bred gelding, who is one of the most improved horses in the country, registered the first stakes success of his career when scoring an impressive 6-length win in the Warrnambool Cup last start. Rawiller noted that Akzar worked well the clockwise direction at Warrnambool last Monday and despite making a significant leap from Listed to Gr1 level, all indications are that he will handle the rise in class. "He's going into Group 1 at weight-for-age, a big step up from what he's been against, but his form this time in has been outstanding and he's deserving of the chance," Rawiller said. "He handled the reverse way terrific and he won his first start in Ireland going the reverse way. He is just in great order."
