No Run For Western Hymn Before Derby

Friday, 16th May 2014

Western Hymn, rated a general 14-1 chance for the Investec Derby on 7 June, is set for a racecourse gallop in the coming weeks after trainer John Gosden ruled out giving his unbeaten Gr3 Sandown Classic Trial winner another race before Epsom, reports racingpost.com. The exciting son of High Chaparral accounted for last weekend's Lingfield Derby Trial winner Snow Sky when scoring on his reappearance at Newbury in April before following up in brilliant fashion at Sandown. Gosden, who won the Derby with Benny The Dip in 1997, said: "Western Hymn has had two runs already this year so he's not short on experience and doesn't need to run in another trial." He added, "Instead, we plan to take him for an away-day somewhere for a racecourse gallop to put an edge on him. After that he will probably go to Breakfast with the Stars at Epsom, where we already plan to take [Oaks favourite] Taghrooda for her eggs and bacon." Western Hymn is the latest star for his high profile sire High Chaparral who has produced the likes of champion So You Think, Toronado, It's A Dundeel and Shoot Out.
