SAf Vets Run Rule Through Bute

Phenylbutazone, one of the more contentious medications in the thoroughbred world, has had a ban placed on it by the South African Veterinary Council, reports sportingpost.co.za. Still widely used as a race day medication in the US for its anti-inflammatory properties and to treat lameness, Bute was until recently still available in South Africa on prescription. While it is now a prohibited substance in South Africa, "professional practitioners who wish to use it for specific purposes may apply for a permit from the Director General of the Department of Health".
