Gr1 Winner Solzhenitsyn Retired

Tuesday, 20th May 2014

Meanwhile, dual Gr1 winner Solzhenitsyn (St. Petersburg-Tri Victory, by Victory Dance) has been retired following his last place finish in the BRC Sprint at Doomben on Saturday, reports NZ Racing Desk. The Robert Heathcote-trained Solzhenitsyn, winner of successive Gr1 Toorak Handicaps in 2012 and 2013, raced well below his best on the weekend and was later found to be lame in his near foreleg. Part-owner Damon Gabbedy confirmed on Sunday that the 7YO has run his last race. "Our Solzhenitsyn ride is over. What a ride it's been! Two Group Ones and a little bit of racing history in back-to-back Toorak Handicaps," he said. "Thanks to Rob Heathcote for an amazing job and Richard Otto for all the early work, and biggest thanks of all to my genius mate Paul Willetts for finding him for $10,000 at a weanling sale in New Zealand." Solzhenitsyn retires with 13 wins from 38 starts and earnings of $1,087,615.
