War Affair Wins Gr1 Singapore Guineas
Outstanding New Zealand-bred 3YO gelding War Affair (O'Reilly-Kristique, by Kris S) cruised to a clean sweep of the Singapore Three-Year-Old Challenge when scoring a dominant 4-length win in the S$500,000 Gr1 Singapore Guineas (1600m) at Kranji on Friday night. Last season's champion juvenile continues to go from strength to strength, unleashing a devastating turn of foot down the Kranji home straight to defeat fellow NZ-bred 3YOs Daniel (Guillotine-Tina, by Danasinga) & Goodman (Alamosa-Lucky Street, by Street Cry) in course record time. The victory took War Affair's record to 9 wins (including the Gr2 Golden Horseshoe, Gr2 Singapore 3YO Classic, Gr3 Singapore 3YO Sprint & Gr3 Juvenile Championship) and 2 placings (including the Gr1 Raffles Cup) from 12 starts for S$1,226,988 earnings. "This is my first Group 1 win, and I have to say there's been a bit of pressure to win this race," said winning trainer Alwin Tan, who only took over the training of War Affair from trainer Mark Walker at the end of last year. "This horse is just wonderful, but I have to say it's also a team effort. We've all worked as a very good team." War Affair, who was purchased for NZ$70,000 by David Ellis at the 2012 Karaka Premier Yearling Sale from his breeder Trelawney stud, is a grandson of 4-time Gr1-winning US mare Nastique, dam of Gr1-winning Japanese galloper Nobo True (Broad Brush) and US Gr3 winner Thunder Kitten.
